Welcome To

West Marin

Coastal homes make up some of the most awe-inspiring real estate in West Marin.

Welcome to West Marin

Among the unspoiled countryside and dramatic coastal bluffs, a collection of Marin County gems offers up peaceful, private lifestyles.

Residents of West Marin exist in a time capsule of spellbinding nature, a swath of the county in which one might traverse golden beaches brushed with white-capped waves or stand tall atop mountain foothills and ridges flush with wildflowers. North and west of the bayside cities like Tiburon and San Rafael, West Marin is typically thought of as comprising Fairfax, Woodacre, Bolinas, and Stinson Beach.

Fairfax and Woodacre are landbound towns, where redwood trees stand tall and homes are built right into the hills themselves. Fairfax in particular is also known for its adorable Downtown, filled with little boutiques and cafes. Further south and west onto the coast, the incorporated communities of Stinson Beach and Bolinas are quiet, beachy respites from the bustle of urban living.

Coastal homes make up some of the most awe-inspiring real estate in West Marin, and often have a price tag of well over one million. Entirely worthwhile, these magnificent properties are outfitted with all you need for a life of modern luxury, and are sometimes even situated directly on the beachfront. Bolinas is a growing community, and for those who want something apart from the sun-drenched cottages, there’s an increasing number of lots available for building custom homes.

What to Love

  • Unequivocal amounts of nature and greenspace
  • Bouncing from ocean to mountain within a single hike
  • Quirky, independent shops and cafes

Local Lifestyle

With 350,000 acres of protected park and open space, the biggest thread connecting all of the communities in West Marin is the cornucopia of natural beauty and the dedication to conserving it. Hiking is among the top pastimes for West Marin residents, who find new trails each day within the substantial expanse of NorCal nature. Each of these communities radiates with effortless small-town charm, perfect for those looking to find a peaceful, local enclave.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

Fairfax is undoubtedly West Marin’s go-to for a little retail therapy, and along the streets of the Downtown District are appealing specialty shops and fashion boutiques. Retailers like Revolution 9 and Beach House Style will keep shoppers up-to-date on the latest gifting trends, while the modern metaphysical store, The Eleventh House, will provide an experience like no other.

Dining is a must in Fairfax, as well, especially at restaurants such as Sorella Caffe. Locals rave over the intoxicating flavors of these sumptuous Italian dishes, and this sister-run eatery ensures its meals are made with only the finest of fresh, local ingredients. Way Station is another beloved Fairfax venue, and it isn’t hard to see why. A jovial, family-friendly atmosphere enriches the menu of smoked barbecue and comfort fare, which can be enjoyed indoors or in the lovely beer garden.

For those down in Stinson Beach looking for a quick bite to eat that they won’t soon forget, there’s Breakers Café. Set in a cheerful cottage, this ocean-themed restaurant carries breakfast and lunch menus loaded with American comfort fare infused with a Latin twist. Rustic-chic, Breakers is also a popular venue for weddings and special events.

Things to Do

Just as West Marin residents are likely to hit up Fairfax for their commercial needs, they’re also apt to visit the town for its impressive social and festival calendar. The Fairfax Festival, in particular, is a highly anticipated annual event that marries live local entertainment, fresh food, organic beers and wines, children’s games, and even ecological education.

Though the list of outdoor excursions available in West Marin could be a guide in and of itself, there are several notable locations that need to be on the top of any sightseer. Hidden just three miles west of the iconic Muir Woods, Muir Beach features a serene cove and lagoon in addition to the beach itself. Several trails invite hikers to experience astonishing coastal views, including the newly established, multi-use Dias Ridge Trail. At 2.8 miles, the Cataract Falls Trail leads up to a mesmerizing view of its namesake falls, cascading over moss-covered stone in an ethereal, majestic scene.
