Welcome to San Rafael

Fall in love with Marin County’s crown jewel, a central city overflowing with a wealth of culture, irresistible energy, and invigorating nature

Palms sway along the charming red-brick streets of Downtown San Rafael, quietly busy in the shadow of the historic San Rafael Arcángel mission. A convenient central location permits the existence of waterfront areas and sleepy hillside neighborhoods, all while the city itself plays the role of Marin County’s cultural heartbeat.

San Rafael is the largest and oldest city in Marin County, as well as the county seat, and is invariably recognized as the area’s center for entertainment. A colorful history is the base of the city’s appeal, particularly when character-rich architecture is mixed in with the city’s urban flair. San Rafael was officially incorporated in 1874, and since then has continued to dazzle visitors as a top Bay Area destination.

The residential real estate in San Rafael brings a multitude of architectural diversity to the table, due in part to the fact that homes here can span from pre-1940s Victorians, to contemporary apartments right near the action of Downtown. Many of the most coveted properties in the city are those along the water which brag private docking amenities. From mid-century ranches and to sprawling 70s renovations, it’s not hard to find your own unique layout among the homes in San Rafael.

What to Love

  • A reputation for its impeccable and diverse food offerings
  • Bound between water and mountains, rich in beauty
  • Community spirit and a large number of local events

Local Lifestyle

Though San Rafael is a bit farther out from San Francisco than some of the Marin County cities such as Mill Valley or Sausalito, the city maintains a stronger urban personality than any other facet of the county. A bevy of seasonal, weekly, and yearly events keeps residents on their toes, while the lively commercial scene allows for daily entertainment.

Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping

San Rafael has an assortment of retail options scattered throughout its boundaries, including the well-respected name brands such as Kohls and HomeGoods at locations like Northgate Center. While residents in any neighborhood are minutes away from obtaining their everyday needs, the city’s Downtown district is typically seen as the pulse of all things commercial and cultural.

Boutique shopping and top-notch dining awaits here, and include premier foodie restaurants like the best brewpub in Marin County, The State Room. A convivial atmosphere welcomes diners to the hip interior of The State Room, where the menus are bursting with collections of craft beers, innovative cocktails, and elevated American eats.

Dig into the phenomenal cuisine at Sol Food, the city’s specialist in authentic Puerto Rican fare. LaVier Latin Fusion’s menu is a unique take on traditional dishes from Latin culture, and the resulting meals can range from artisan sandwiches like the beef asado to surprising entrees such as the coconut chicken curry.

Things to Do

The plenitude of nature surrounding and woven throughout San Rafael makes it easy for outdoor enthusiasts to get their fill of adventures, starting with the local Lagoon Park. Catering to those simply seeking refuge rather than a full trek, Lagoon Park offers 10 acres of sweeping grass, waterside picnicking and fishing, and walking paths.

More daring excursionists might consider heading north to Terra Linda Sleepy Hollow Ridge, a vast expanse of over 1,000 acres. The trails here follow hilled terrain dotted with brush and California Bay trees, and at top elevations, these challenging hikes present panoramic views of Mount Tamalpais and Big Rock Ridge.

An elegant take on outdoorsmanship, Peacock Gap Golf Club is San Rafael’s public golf course and has been voted the best in the county by Marin Magazine. The championship-level course is rated as highly walkable and yet challenging enough to suit a variety of skill levels, and there’s hardly a better place to be on a sunny afternoon than on the course’s manicured fairways.

Schools

San Rafael is home to a number of excellent schools. Top educational opportunities include:

  • Marin Academy, 9-12, highly rated private high school rated among the top 30 in the state
  • The Branson School, 9-12, the #9 ranked best private high school in California
